This article discusses the urbanization of Costa Rica's Greater Metropolitan Area, which is spatially fragmented and socially segregated. The consequences of rapid urbanization include environmental pollution and an almost absurd perception of insecurity. The article presents the Legislative Assembly competition, which aims to prevent an important political representation and urban program from migrating out into suburbia. The winning proposal illustrates the struggle of the old and new city in the complex process of modernization.
